Why are preservatives used in some products?
Sulphur dioxide is used in most dried fruit to help retain colour, preserve nutrients, and extend shelf life.
We keep preservative levels low — and we offer a wide range of preservative-free snacks too.
Which products are preservative-free?
Our preservative-free range includes:
- Raisins
- Cranberries
- Fruit Flakes, Fruit Swirls, and Fruit Cubes
- All Nuts and Seeds
Are all Montagu products locally produced?
We prioritise local suppliers wherever possible. However, we may import products when:
- They’re not produced in South Africa
- They’re only seasonally available
- Local quality or pricing doesn’t meet our standards
Why do you use palm oil?
We use only Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) and are committed to ethical sourcing. We’re also actively exploring alternative oils for roasting our nuts.
What are CSSR Almonds?
CSSR stands for California Select Sheller Run – a grade and variety of almond.
- “California” refers to the growing region
- “Select Sheller Run” indicates a mixed grade with more colour variation
- CSSR almonds are generally considered lower in grade than NPS almonds
What are NPS Almonds?
NPS stands for Nonpareil Supreme, a premium almond grade.
- “Nonpareil” is the classification
- “Supreme” indicates top grade
- Our almonds are non-GMO and traditionally produced — we do not use genetically modified varieties
