Top Tips on How to Impress Your Boss this Bosses Day
We’re pretty sure that you’ve been working 9-5 long enough to know that impressing the Boss Man (or Boss Lady) is a difficult feat (especially around Bonus Time, right?)
Be it for that simple word of acknowledgement, credit for a job well done, or even that small raise that you have been working so hard for, whatever the reason, let’s face it: when it comes to finding ways to impress our bosses, we need all the help we can get!
Here’s the thing though… how do you impress the boss without it seeming like you’re sucking up? Because let’s be honest, no one likes a suck-up.
Luckily there are ways to help you stand out from the crowd and impress your boss:
Tip #1: Be Consistent
One day you make your deadlines, another day you couldn’t be bothered. One day you seem interested, the other day you really don’t want to be interested.
One day you produce work to a standard worthy of a Pulitzer Prize, and another day it looks like the dog’s breakfast.
Be honest now… sound familiar?
Every boss loves it when their employees are consistent with the work they produce and the interest they take in their work. Consistency is key when you want to impress them and stand out from the crowd.
Tip #2: Be Creative
Have you ever worked for a creative type? A boss that most likely spends most of their spare time on Pinterest rather than on business quotes?
The best way to impress a creative boss is to constantly offer creative ideas that will improve the way things are done at the office. This is the part where you spend your spare time on Pinterest to stay up to speed with creative business trends.
Think creatively and before you know it, your boss will shout “Genius!” and put in a good word for you around Bonus Time.
Tip #3: Dress Well
Okay, so sometimes when we wake up to the typical summer weather that awaits us outside, all we want to do is throw on your flip flops and a tank top for work.
Are we right, or are we right?
The temptation to not dress-to-impress happens often, but what if we told you that dressing well (and by well, we mean smart) for work could be that extra star on your boss’s proverbial People-Who-Impress-Me list?
Add an extra five minutes to your morning schedule to make the extra effort in the way you dress. As they say, “dress to impress”.
Tip #4: Stay Late
Most of us know the unwritten rule to impress the powers-that-be: arrive first, leave last, work overtime. We know it’s not always possible to do this every day, but if we’re honest with ourselves, we probably do it less probably less than we should (mmm hmmm 🙂 ).
Nothing impresses an employer more than an employee who goes above and beyond. Why?
It shows them that you care about your work, and ultimately the work your boss shows to their superiors.
Here’s one great tip that will really impress your boss: where possible, only leave work after they have left work.
This is easier said than done: cue that moment when five o clock strikes and your boss hasn’t even moved an inch from their desk. “Not another late night!” (insert hiding face emoji here)
Still, do this whenever you can and it move up a line or two on the People-Who-Impress-Me list.
Tip #5: Big Fat Liar
Has your nose grown more than your desk plant in the last couple of months? No one likes a Pinocchio in the office, especially the boss.
We know how it goes:
You said you would get something done for them by a specific date, they head over to your desk and that internal light bulb reminds you that you haven’t done it.
So you smile and confidently (and maybe a little too loudly) say, “It’s done! It will be in your inbox in the next five minutes”, then you frantically try and throw something together in the amount of time it takes for your boss to walk over to their desk, open their inbox, only to find it’s not there.
#Fail, right? Don’t be the office Pinocchio: be honest and don’t make a habit of procrastinating. Your future self will thank you…
Tip #6: Beat the deadlines
This is probably the toughest thing to do in any work environment because just as you are making good time on one project, other deadlines keep are looming in the distance.
How do you stay ahead of deadlines? We wish it was easy but it isn’t. In fact, the only way to really meet (or beat) deadlines is to come in early, leave later or work overtime on weekends. Sometimes you’ve just “gotta do what you gotta do”.
Beating deadlines also gives your boss time to go through your work properly so that their stress levels are also kept to a minimum.
