What is ginger?

Ginger: a humble root, famous for its medicinal properties and health benefits.

Ginger refers to the underground bulb belonging to the plant with a firm, striated texture. Its flesh can be white, yellow or even red and is covered by a thick brownish skin.

What is ginger used for?

Ginger has been used for centuries as a condiment in many Asian cultures.

The mature root is dried and powdered and used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Studies have shown that ginger possesses many therapeutic properties.

It has a potent anti-oxidative effect as well as an anti-inflammatory effect.

What does ginger taste like?

Ginger tastes pretty potent on its own (not recommended for on-the-go snacking), but can add a spicy bite and flavour to Asian and Indian food and hot drinks. It gives a tangy and pungent taste to food. It can be eaten fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, in oil form or as a juice.

Ginger in the kitchen

Ginger is a really versatile addition to food and drinks:

  • Turn up the heat while cooling off by making ginger lemonade. Simply combine some Montagu ginger pieces, lemon juice, honey and water.
  • Combine grated or cut ginger pieces, soy sauce, olive oil and garlic to make a wonderful salad dressing.
  • Add small cut ginger to your favourite stuffing for baked apples.
  • Add some Montagu pieces to your favourite tea or juice to spice it up a bit.
  • Spice up your healthy sautéed vegetables by adding freshly minced ginger pieces.
  • For a sweet treat dip some ginger pieces in dark chocolate and enjoy.

Remember that age-old remedy that seems to have been passed down since before your great-great-gran’s day? Those ladies knew what they were doing when it came to beating colds and flu the natural way.

They also knew that “prevention is better than cure”, so even if you’re feeling on top form now, keep those bugs at arm’s length with a potent blend of these natural flu-fighters:
